On this past Saturday afternoon, the THI-2 Tunnel Boring Machine deployed by the L&T-SUCG JV for package CC-27 of Delhi Metro’s Phase 3 project made a successful breakthrough at the 38.235 km Magenta Line’s RK Puram mid-shaft! This TBM was commissioned from the Vasant Vihar station in September 2015 and traveled roughly 950 meters (built 659 rings) to reach the mid-shaft which has been constructed exclusively for the line’s up-line tunnel.
The mid-shaft is located on the edge of RK Puram’s Sector-5 adjacent to the Outer Ring Road and the 1st breakthrough here took place from the opposite end (Munirka side) on December 29, 2015 by its sister machine THI-1.
With this breakthrough out of the way, now only 1 more TBM breakthrough is left on the entire line. This last one will take some time and might drag the tunneling phase up until November.
TBM | Tunnel | Origin | Destination | Rings Built |
CREG (#7) | Down-Line | Vasant Vihar | Munirka | 470/904 |
The DMRC’s MD, Mangu Singh, recently admitted to delays in both the Pink & Magenta lines’ construction which took everyone in Delhi and outside by surprise, but if you’ve been following the Delhi section of the site, then this revelation is nothing new. A new official deadline is yet to be announced by them, so stay tuned for that.
